Summer is winding down and the election campaigns are heating up. It’s hard to believe that the General Election is just three months away!

If you haven’t yet made your 2010 contribution, now is the time to do so. HOSPAC is working to raise $320,000 to help hospital-friendly candidates win their races. But we are not yet two-thirds of the way toward reaching our goal. Please make your contribution today. Your immediate support is critical to the health of our hospitals.

Don’t forget to reach out to your colleagues on behalf of HOSPAC so that your hospital can reach its overall fundraising goals and be recognized as a top achiever. Tools and tips for conducting your own HOSPAC campaign are available on HOSPAC’s website.

There are several upcoming Leadership Receptions around the state – see all the details below. I hope to see you at one of these events!

Garrett Named Star Trustee Award Winner

Carlyle Walton (left), chief executive officer of Metroplex Adventist Hospital in Killeen, and Dan Stultz, M.D., FACP, FACHE (right), president/CEO of the Texas Hospital Association, were on hand to honor Henderson Garrett (center), Metroplex board member and winner of HOSPAC’s 2010 Star Trustee Award.
Henderson Garrett, secretary of the board at Metroplex Health System in Killeen, has received HOSPAC’s 2010 Star Trustee Award in recognition of his long-term support of the PAC. Garrett accepted the award during a luncheon held in conjunction with the Texas Healthcare Trustees Annual Conference, July 30 in San Antonio.

“Henderson is a tireless champion for health care in Central Texas, and he brings that same energy to his support of HOSPAC,” said David Tesmer, chairman of HOSPAC and senior vice president of advocacy and community benefit at Arlington-based Texas Health Resources. “He understands the importance of building relationships with elected officials to help shape the future of health care policy.”

Garrett, a native Texan from Fairfield, received his bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1952. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of meritorious service. He earned a master’s degree in 1973, and joined Metroplex Hospital in Killeen as assistant administrator, eventually retiring as vice president of operations. In his more than 20 years with the hospital, Garrett was integral to the operation and growth of what would become Metroplex Health System, increasing the facility from 32 to 233 beds. He was involved with the hospital through his service as secretary of the Board of Directors and as chairman of Metroplex Management Inc., which formerly oversaw the operation of Metroplex Urgent Care Center.

Garrett is active with the Texas Healthcare Trustees and served as chairman in 2002-03. He served on the HOSPAC Board of Directors from 2005 until 2009, and continues to inspire other trustees to become more politically active.

Host a Voter Registration Drive at Your Hospital!

The Texas Hospital Association and HOSPAC have prepared an online toolkit to help mobilize Texas’ 355,000 health care employees and make them influential participants in the Nov. 2 General Election. The toolkit includes general information about voting in Texas, step-by-step instructions on hosting a voter registration drive and get-out-the-vote campaign, sample correspondence, artwork and other resources.

Hospitals are urged to consider hosting voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote activities during the weeks leading up to Election Day. Some facilities also may want to serve as polling sites for early voting or on Election Day; check with your local elections administrator for more details. To participate in the Nov. 2 General Election, voters must be registered by Oct. 4. Early voting will take place Oct. 18-29.

Detailed information about HOSPAC-endorsed candidates is available online. If you have questions about the upcoming elections, please contact Jennifer Banda, J.D., senior director of government relations, at 512/465-1046.
