Spring is definitely in the air and the heat of summer isn’t far behind. I enjoyed seeing many of you at HOSPAC’s recent Leadership Reception at the Ballpark in Arlington. Thank you to the good people at Sterling Barnett Little, Inc., for again hosting a Leadership Reception in their beautiful – and air-conditioned – suite overlooking the outfield. That’s the best way to watch a baseball game in Texas! The year is nearly half over and HOSPAC has raised 35 percent of its goal of $320,000 to help hospital-friendly candidates win their elections in 2010. It’s time to kick into high gear! While it’s important to make your personal contribution, I also want to encourage you to consider reaching out to your colleagues on behalf of HOSPAC. Often, the only reason someone doesn’t contribute to the PAC is because they haven’t been asked! A new toolkit, available online at www.HOSPAC.org, includes all the materials you need to conduct a peer-to-peer outreach campaign. The HOSPAC staff is more than willing to help – just call!
Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

| The American Hospital Association, in partnership with the Texas Hospital Association and HOSPAC, has awarded Steve Sanders, chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, with AHA’s Grassroots Champion Award.
As a 2010 Grassroots Champion, Sanders is being recognized for his exceptional leadership in generating grassroots and community activity in support of hospitals. The Grassroots Champion Award is presented annually to one individual from each state. The 2010 honorees were recognized at a special Breakfast of Grassroots Champions at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting on April 27 in Washington, D.C.
“Steve understands the importance of political involvement and he works hard to build effective relationships with lawmakers,” said Dan Stultz, M.D., FACHE, FACP, president/chief executive officer of THA.
Sanders has been a member of the HOSPAC Board of Directors since 2002 and served as chairman in 2008-09, during which time the PAC raised the most funds in its history.
He was named CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital in April 1994 with added responsibility as North Market Leader in 2009. Sanders has been with the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System since 1982, serving as the vice president/CEO of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital and prior to that as vice president of Memorial Health Ventures. He is active in a number of community and civic groups in the Montgomery County area. Sanders holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and business management from the University of Houston, as well as a master’s degree in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio.
